Monica is a Licensed Professional Counselor and provides active psychotherapy in assisted living facilities/nursing facilities. Additionally, she works in her private practice. Monica is a bilingual (English and Spanish) therapist. She works with teens, adults, and families who suffer from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and relationship problems. Monica’s clients range from children aged 11+ to geriatrics.
Monica earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in Honolulu. She then completed her master’s degree in counseling from Amberton University here in Dallas, Texas.
Monica’s background includes working at mental health clinics and psychiatric hospitals with individuals, teens, and families who suffer from severe mental illness, struggle with everyday stressors, and have difficulty coping with life’s challenges. While in therapy, she uses research-based techniques along with creative and integrative thinking to offer therapy tailored to the uniqueness of each client. She is also trained in EMDR therapy.
Monica’s approach to therapy is to help clients identify their strengths, current processes that are working in their lives, and attributes that have worked in the past. Her focus on prior successes and possibilities rather than on mistakes and failures sets her apart from other therapists. She hates the word “failure”. Monica prefers to call each misstep in a person’s life a growth opportunity! Monica helps her clients learn how to make better and more effective choices to gain more control over their lives.
Her favorite quote is “People take charge of their lives rather than being the victims of circumstances beyond their control.” – Gerald Corey
